On May 18, 1980, Mt. St Helen in Washington State underwent the most cataclysmic and destructive volcanic eruption in US history. Triggered by a magnitude 5.1 earthquake, it sent ash 15 miles into the air and flattened 230 sq. miles of forest within minutes. The disaster claimed 57 lives.
