This 1870 image is considered the first actual photograph taken of a battle. Taken during the Franco-Prussian war, it shows a line of Prussian troops advancing. The photographer stood with the French defenders when he captured this image.

Henry Magruder, a notorious bushwhacker. Bushwhackers were pro-Confederate guerillas who were active in the 1860s. They led raids against the military. Many were also notorious for committing war crimes. Magruder raped multiple women and burned a free black man alive .
