The only surviving image of Stalins two deadliest secret police chiefs, Lavrentiy Beria & Nikolai Yezhov, together in the 1930s. Yezhov directed the “Great Terror” of 1936-38 before being replaced by his deputy Beria, who is rumored to have personally strangled Yezhov upon succeeding him (2627x1985)

Louisa "Madam Lou" Bunch (1857-1935) ran the most successful brothel in the gold rush town of Central City Colorado. Well known for her kindness, when an epidemic swept through the area, she and her sporting girls gave nursing care to the sick and dying miners.
